Welcome to Matewan HighSchool, the home of the Tigers.  We are glad you have become one ofus, who realizes intellectual, social, and physical skills are important to theeducational process.  We strive to develop these skills and abilities tobetter prepare you for the challenging and changing society. You are now amember of a great student body that takes pride in our school and enjoys thevariety of opportunities for developing various interest and abilities. Thishandbook has been prepared to enable you to become aware of the policies andprocedures of our school.  We have included information concerning ourinstructional and recreational programs, and the extracurricular activities ofMatewan High School.  This information has been carefully prepared so thatit will be of great value in helping you adjust to our school and become anintegral part of it.

TEACHER CLASSROOM RULES

Each teacher will have a list of classroomrules for their individual classes.  This list will be posted within theroom.  Students should acquaint themselves with each teacher’s classroomrules and comply with them accordingly. 

ONCE YOU’RE HERE,YOU’RE HERE

NO ONE MAY LEAVE THE SCHOOLWITHOUT A PARENT/GUARDIAN SIGNING THEM OUT.

We have always operated as a closed campusfor all students. This means that students may not leave the school grounds fromthe time they arrive in the morning until dismissal time. We will not accept anytelephone calls for students to be signed out by the office. Parents/ guardians mustcome to sign out their child.  No one may leave the schoolduring breaks or lunch. 

I’D RATHER BE CRUISIN’

Driving to school is a Senior High Schoolprivilege.  ALL students who drive must have permission from theadministration and must turn their keys in every morning. Parking will bepermitted on a first come, first serve basis. All other students will park onthe over flow lot adjacent to our school. Students caught speeding on the campuswill be prevented from driving on our campus. Failure to abide by these ruleswill result in a loss of driving privileges.  Parking spots will bedesignated for student parking.  Students should not park in facultyparking areas. Students, parents, teachers, and visitors are not to park inareas designated for handicapped and loading and unloading students.

Parking on the pad in the rear of ourbuilding is not permitted during school hours.

Students must follow and meet theseguidelines:

  1. Must possess a valid West Virginia driver’s license.
  2. Must have regular access to a properly registered, inspected and insured vehicle.
  3. Must maintain acceptable attendance and disciplinary standards. If she/he arrives tardy, privileges can and may be revoked. In addition, he/she must meet disciplinary rules as well as attendance standards to drive.
  4. Must complete and return a signed student driver agreement including the consent to the search of a vehicle.

   5.    Must turntheir keys into the office.

Note to parents and students:  Itis a privilege to drive to school – Not a right!

We highly recommend to parents that studentsnot drive to school. Buses are much safer for students and prevent them fromstopping at other places; also, if your child lets other students ride withthem, you, as a parent, will be responsible for ALL injuries. 

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

Matewan High School takes pride in itsGuidance and Counseling program.  We believe in holistic counseling. We offer services in many areas including social, emotional, academic, careercounseling and guidance.  In addition, the counselor can assist inreferrals to outside agencies.  Students wishing to see the counselor areencouraged to make arrangements with Mrs. Sammons.

PROGESS REPORTS ANDREPORT CARDS

Interim progress reports will be issued everyfour and one-half weeks.  Additional reports may be sent at any time duringthe school year when a teacher feels it necessary to produce beneficial results.Unsatisfactory reports serve as an invitation to parents/guardians to come toschool to meet with the teacher and counselor in an attempt to improve studentperformance. Students and parents/guardians should review the interim reportsand report cards carefully and note variations between subject and absences.Such variations usually indicate that the student is either absent or arrivingto class late.  If variations are noted, parents/ guardians should contactthe classroom teacher for a conference. Report cards are issued four times eachschool year (approximately every nine weeks). When reviewing report cards,parents/guardians are advised to contact the appropriate teacher and/or guidancecounselor if they have concerns. 

Prohibited items

Students may not possess thefollowing items on school property or at school events without the explicitpermission of a teacher or administrator.  Such items will be taken fromyou and held for your parents.

  1. CD Players, cell phones, beepers, cameras, television sets, or any other electronic items of distraction.
  2. Gambling devices: dice, playing cards, etc.
  3. Skateboards, rubber bands, baseball cards, etc.
  4. Permanent markers, Liquid paper, etc.
 

FIRE/EMERGENCY DRILLS

Fire drills at regular intervals are requiredby law and are an important safety precaution. The teacher in each classroomwill give the students instruction on the proper exit. Each exit in the schoolis clearly indicated. The sound of the Fire alarm is the signal to leave thebuilding immediately by the designated exit.

  1. Every fire drill is to be regarded as a real fire.
  2. Fire drills can take place at any time, whether the students are in the gymnasium, in assemblies, passing in the corridors, or in the cafeteria.
  3. All students should vacate the building immediately.
  4. They must not go to their lockers and should leave the building in an orderly manner.

    To turn in a false alarm is a criminal offense.

ATHLETICS

Students must have a 2.0 grade point averagefor the previous semester before participating in sports.  The WestVirginia Secondary School Activities Commission governs rules and regulationsfor the athletic program at Matewan High School. It is recommended that allstudents participate in at least one sport, club or organization while atMatewan High School.

PARTICIPATION INEXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

All students who participatein any extra-curricular activity MUST attend school a full day on the day of theactivity unless they have prior permission for the office (only extenuatingcircumstances will be honored). Any student who misses a half-day of school orwho does not attend at all will not be allowed to participate in the activityscheduled for that day.

CLUBS

It is recommended that all studentsparticipate in at least one sport, club or organization while at Matewan HighSchool. Being a part of an organization makes you feel more like a part of theschool while making the club better by contributing your time and talents. Several clubs already exists at our school. This year we are hoping to addmany more clubs.  We need your participation in order to improve them. If you have ideas or suggestions, please feel free to share them within your AAgroup. 

ON MY HONOR

Students who receive an “A” in allsubjects will attain the “A” Honor Roll.  Students who maintain a 3.0grade point average in all classes will also qualify for the Honor Roll. 

LIBRARY

The school library is apleasant place in which to read, study, or do research work.  We offer acollection of reading material that covers a wide range of interests. Reference books and magazines are to be used only in the library.  Rememberthat library materials belong to all students and need your care. 

PARENTS AND VISITORS

Parents and individuals are ALWAYSwelcome at MHS.  We encourage parents to join our Parent Support Group. We also encourage parents to participate in our Parent Volunteer Program. We askthat a few rules be observed in order that we may run the safest effectiveschool possible for our students. They are:

    • All visitors MUST sign in on a sheet in the office. No one is allowed beyond the double doors without office permission.
    • Outsiders with no school business are not allowed on school property
    • Small children are not allowed to come to school with an older brother or sister.
    • Students may not bring an out-of-town visitor with them to school.
    • It is the responsibility of the student to inform his/her visitor of the school visitation policy.

All students must have a hall pass from theadministrator or teacher to be in the halls.  This applies to ALLstudents.

LOCKERS

Each student is assigned a locker for thestorage of books and personal possessions.  It is the student’sresponsibility to see that the locker is kept locked and in order at all times. Lockers are not to be shared. Lockers are the property of the Matewan HighSchool and are assigned to each student for a fee of $4.00 per person. Studentsmust be aware that the administration reserves the right to inspect lockerswithout students’ notification. Although these lockers are well designed andsecure it is advisable that no personal valuables be kept in an individual’slocker. The administration advises that students NOT give their combinations toother students. Students should not share lockers. Students are not to go totheir lockers during instructional time since the opening and closing of lockerdoors creates a disruption to the instruction that is taking place in adjoiningclassrooms. Please plan accordingly. Students may go to their lockers beforeschool, during the change of regular classes, before and after lunch periods. Student lockers shall remain the property of the school, and students shall bepermitted to use them subject to the following rules:

  • The school principal shall retain a key/combination to all lockers assigned to students, and the school principal or his designee may inspect such lockers at any time.
  • Students shall keep their lockers, neat, clean, and free from fire hazards at all times.
  • A student, who leases a locker, shall review, sign, and execute, the LOCKER USE AGREEMENT FORM.

All notices of club meetings, athletic andsocial events, general information for the day, and specific instructions areannounced on the P.A. system each morning and afternoon. 

LOST AND FOUND

The Lost and Found Department is located inRoom 117.  If you have lost articles or have found anything, please checkwith the office. 

MONEY AND VALUABLES

Please do not bring large amounts of money toschool.  All valuable articles should be in the possession of the owner atall times.  THE SCHOOL CANNOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOST MONEY OROTHER ARTICLES.

TELEPHONE/STUDENTMESSAGES

The school telephones are to be used forschool purposes only.  Students will not be allowed to use the telephonewithout permission from a teacher or administrator. Messages or deliveriesthat are not an emergency will not be delivered to students while they are inclass. A telephone is located in the commons area for students’ use. Studentsare welcome to use this phone provided it is not during instructional time.NO STUDENT IS ALLOWED TO USE THE LOBBY PAY PHONE DURING CLASS.  Thelobby phone is not to be used for longer than 3 minutes. 

STUDENTINFORMATION/CHANGE OF ADDRESS

If your last name, street address, ortelephone number changes at any time during the school year, please notify theAttendance Office and Guidance Department immediately.  This is veryimportant in keeping our records accurate.  In the event of an emergency,we must be able to contact a parent or guardian.

BUS REGULATIONS

Bus drivers have the same rights andauthority as a classroom teacher.  The driver may assign any student whopresents problems an assigned seat.  Bus problems will be referred to theassistant principal or principal for prompt consideration. Students who presentproblems that jeopardize the safety of others may have their privilege of ridingthe bus withdrawn by the school system.

1102.9  STUDENTDRESS CODE

The Mingo County Board of Education iscommitted to an atmosphere conducive to learning, which includes limiteddistractions and disruptions.  Student dress will conform to the standardsof limited distractions and the integrity of formal education.

OBJECTIVES

  • To preserve an environment conducive to learning
  • To promote character education, concepts of self-esteem and self-value

    DESCRIPTION

Students shall not wear:

(Grades 5-12)

  • Garments which expose the midriff, cleavage, bare shoulders or underarm areas
  • Garments which expose the underwear
  • Shorts, slacks, dresses or skirts that are tight fitting, or inappropriate in length, or reveal the underwear
  • Hats, caps, sunglasses, or outerwear (coats/jackets) within the building or classrooms.  Such items are to be stored in the designated areas of the building (i.e. lockers, hangers in classrooms, etc.) [Exception- Light sensitive prescription glasses]
  • Shirts, belt buckles of other wearing apparel that advertises and/or promotes:
    • Drugs
    • Tobacco
    • Alcohol
    • Weapons
    • Suggestive language
  • Metal taps, cleats, inappropriate footwear, wallet chains, or spurs on school property.
  • No electronic devices other than what is educationally relevant
  • Gym shorts or sweat pants in areas other than physical education class. [Exception- Medical] Adopted:  August 22, 2001

ATTENDANCE POLICY

The Mingo County Board of Educationrecognizes that a direct relationship exists between daily school attendance andstudent performance, graduation, and good work habits.  The purpose of thispolicy is to promote daily school attendance.  Daily attendance isnecessary for students to meet their school’s academic program standards aseach day’s learning builds of the work previously completed. The intent of theBoard is to increase attendance by creating a positive, safe environmentconducive to learning and committed to helping students develop responsibility,self-discipline and other good work habits.  WV State Code and MCBOE policyrequire compulsory school attendance.  Each parent or guardian isresponsible for assuring that their child complies with the requirements of theWV State Code and MCBOE policy regarding compulsory school attendance. Inaccordance with Section 18-8-1 of the WV State Code, absences from school may beexcused for the following reasons:

  1. Illness or injury of the student.  This includes medical, dental, and/or other health appointments that cannot be scheduled outside the school day.  Illness and injury, or medical appointments of student may be verified by the parent/guardian not to exceed three (3) consecutive or five (5) total days during the school year.  Verification by a healthcare provider will be required if absences exceed three (3) consecutive or five (5) total days.
  2. Illness or injury in family when a healthcare provider verifies student absence as essential.
  3. Calamity, such as fire in the home, flood, or family emergency if verified by the principal.
  4. Death in the immediate family, maximum of three (3) days for each occurrence, except in extraordinary circumstances.  Family includes:  mother, father, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, child, and spouse.
  5. Death of in-laws, maximum of two (2) days for each occurrence, except in extraordinary circumstances.  In-laws include:  mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law.
  6. Funeral of close friend or relative, limit of one (1) day for each occurrence, except in extraordinary circumstances.  Relatives include:  uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, and cousin.
  7. Leaves of educational value adhering to these stipulations:                                                                 
    • Prior approval of principal
    • Prior submission and approval of educational plan detailing objectives and activities
    • Leave or leaves not to exceed a total of five (5) days in a school year, and limited to two (2) separate requests to obtain those five (5) days
    • Leave to extend more than five (5) days requires Board approval
  8. School-approved curricular or extracurricular activities.  Students who are participating in an authorized off-campus school activity shall be counted as present.  Students are not excused from classes on the day following an extracurricular activity that caused them to return home late on the evening before.
  9. Legal obligation with verification from attorney, judge, magistrate, or other juvenile authority.
  10. Failure of bus to run, bus running extremely late, or extremely hazardous conditions, verified by principal.
  11. Observance of religious holidays.

Any absence not included in the aboveshall be considered unexcused.

TARDINESS AND EARLYDISMISSAL

Students arriving late to school must SIGN-INat the office.  Tardiness should only be due to an emergency.  It isimportant for the students to be in class on time.  Important instructionaltime is lost due to tardies.  It is not only disruptive to the tardystudent, but also to the entire class.

     A student may bereleased from school during the school day when in the custody of a parent orguardian or with the consent of the principal or designee if the parent hasprovided written consent for the prearranged medical or dental appointments orother reasons that the principal or designee deems acceptable.  Earlyreleases should be kept at minimum as the student is still missing class. The student shall be reported as absent, if he/she leaves school early. The absence shall be excused if it is in compliance with the attendance policy.

MAKE-UP WORK

Teachers in grades 9-12 will assign make-upwork to each student upon their return to school.  The student shall beallowed the number of days absent to complete the make-up work. Teachers maygrant an extension to a student if the request is based upon justifiablereasons; however, failure to complete the work assigned by the teacher willresult in the student receiving a zero as the grade for the make-up work in thatclass. Depending upon the circumstances, students may be expected to report toclass early or stay late to make up exams and other missed assignments.  Ifa student has missed a test announced in advance or work assigned prior tohis/her absence, the work will be turned in and the test will be taken on theday the student returns to school. Make-up work is not optional.  Teachersshall be required to make assignments that are relevant to the material coveredfor all classes missed.

1102. DISCIPLINE ANDSTUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

The Student Code of Conduct, as adopted bythe State Board of Education, requires the following of every student:

  1. Students shall behave in a manner that promotes a school environment that is nurturing, orderly, safe and conducive to learning and personal-social development.
  2. Students will help create an atmosphere free from bullying, intimidation and harassment.
  3. Students will demonstrate honesty and trustworthiness.
  4. Students will treat others with respect, deal peacefully with anger, use good manners and be considerate of the feelings of others.
  5. Students will demonstrate responsibility, use self-control and be self-disciplined.
  6. Students will demonstrate fairness, play by the rules, and will not take advantage of others.
  7. Students will demonstrate compassion and caring
  8. Students will demonstrate good citizenship by obeying laws and rules, respecting authority, and by cooperating with others.

Discipline CodeViolations and Actions

The following include, but are not limitedto, the major discipline violations the Mingo County Board of Education, incompliance with the WV State Board Student Code of Conduct Policy, findsinterfere with the education of students and an environment that is conducive tolearning.  The Mingo County Board of Education will require compliance withfederal and state special education discipline procedures relevant to theidentified eligible special education students and/or 504 students.

Level I Violations:

  • Anti-Social Conduct                      

    A student will not orally. In writing, electronically or with photographs or drawings, direct profanity or insulting, obscene gestures toward another student that causes embarrassment, discomfort, or a reluctance to participate in school activities.

  • Cheating/Academic Misconduct    

    A student will not plagiarize, cheat, gain unauthorized access to, or tamper with educational materials.  The response to violations under this section may include academic sanctions in addition to other discipline.

  • Disorderly Conduct 

    A student will not harass another student or other person or misbehave in a manner that causes disruption or obstruction to the educational process.  Disruption caused by talking, making noises, throwing objects, or otherwise distracting another person, constitutes disorderly conduct.  Behavior is considered disorderly if a teacher is prevented from starting an activity or lesson, or has to stop instruction to address the disruption.

  • Improper Operation of a Motor Vehicle 

    A student will not engage in improper parking of a motor vehicle on school property.

  • Inappropriate Displays of Affection

Students will not engage in inappropriatedisplays of                                                                                     affection, such as kissing or embraces of an intimate nature.                                                                                                                     

  • Inappropriate Dress and Grooming  

    A student will not dress or groom in a manner that disrupts the educational process or is detrimental to the health, safety or welfare of others.  A student will not dress in a manner that is distractive or indecent, to the extent that it interferes with the teaching and learning process, including wearing any apparel that displays or promotes any drug, alcohol, or tobacco related product that is prohibited in school buildings, on school grounds, in school-leased or owned vehicles, and at all school-affiliated functions.

  • Leaving School Without Permission

    A student will not leave the school building, classroom, cafeteria, assigned area, or campus without permission from authorized school personnel.

  • Possession of Inappropriate Personal Property  

    A student will not possess personal that is prohibited by school rules or that is disruptive to teaching and learning.

  • Tardiness            

    A student will not fail to be in his/her place of instruction at the assigned time without a valid excuse.

  • Technology Abuse

    A student will not violate the terms of Mingo County Internet-Usage Policy and/or the West Virginia Board of Education Policy Safety and Acceptable Use of the Internet by Students and Educators Policy (2460)

  • Trespassing                                                         

    A student will not enter upon the premises of the county school system property, other than to the location to which the student is assigned, with authorization from proper school authorities.  If removed, suspended, or expelled from school, a student will not return to the school premises without permission of the proper school authorities.

  • Truancy

    In accordance with the Mingo County Board of Education Attendance Policy (4110), a student will not fail to report to the school’s assigned class or activity without prior permission, knowledge or excuse by the school or by the parent/guardian.

Violations of Level I-----School Actions:

School administrators and staff may useappropriate intervention strategies including, but not limited to, staff andstudent/parent conferences, support intervention and counseling programs,student programs for conflict resolution and peer mediation, and programs foranger management and violence prevention.  Any of the followingintervention strategies and disciplinary actions may be used as appropriateresponse to the violation:

  • Administrator/student conference or reprimand
  • Administrator and teacher-parent/guardian conference
  • Referrals to a tobacco cessation program
  • Daily/weekly progress reports
  • Behavior contracts
  • Change in the student’s class schedule
  • School service assignment
  • Confiscation of inappropriate item
  • Restitution/restoration
  • Before and/or after-school detention
  • Immediate exclusion be teacher from one class period of the school day
  • In- school suspension
  • Out-of-school suspension for up to three (3) days for repetitive or severe degree of Level I Violation

Level II Violations:

  • Bullying/Harassment/Intimidation n   

    A student will not bully/intimidate/harass another student.         According to WV Code 18-2c-2, “harassment, intimidation or bullying” means any intentional gesture, or any intentional written, verbal or physical act or threat that: (a)  a reasonable person under the circumstances should know will have the effect of (1) harming a student, (2) damaging a student’s property, (3) placing a student in reasonable fear of harm to his or her person, or (4) placing a student in reasonable fear of damage to his or her property,  or

    (b) is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating, threatening or abusive educational environment for a student.

  • Failure to Serve Assigned Detention     

    A student will not fail to serve an assigned detention of which students and/or parents/guardian have been notified.

  • False Identification     

A student will not use another person’sidentification or give         falseidentification to any school official with intent to deceive school personnel orfalsely obtain money or property.

  • Forgery     

    A student will not sign the name of another person for the purpose of defrauding school personnel or the Board of Education.

  • Gambling                                                              

    A student will not deceive another or cause another to be deceived by false or misleading information in order to obtain anything of value.

  • Gang Activity

    A student will not, by use of violence, force, coercion, threat of violence, or gang activity, cause disruption of obstruction to the educational process.  Gangs are defined as organized groups of students and/or adults who engage in activities that threaten the safety of the general populace, compromise the general community order, and/or interfere with the school district’s education mission.

  • Insubordination/Unruly Conduct                            

    A student will not ignore or refuse to comply with directions or instructions given by school authorities.  Refusing to open a book, write an assignment, work with another student, work in a group, take a test or do any other class or school-related activity not listed herein, refusing to leave a hallway when requested by a school staff member, or running away from school staff when told to stop, all constitute insubordination/unruly conduct.

  • Loitering                                                                

    A student will not remain or linger on school property without a legitimate purpose and/or proper authority.

  • Theft or Possession of Stolen Property   

A student will not, without permission of theowner or custodian of the property, take property or have in his/her possessionproperty valued less than $100.00 which does not belong to the student.

Violations of Level II----School Actions:

  • Any Level I Action(s)
  • Notification of parent if student investigative interview is required
  • Referral to behavior specialist with the School/Special Education Department
  • Referral to school counselor
  • Referral to county social worker
  • Mandatory attendance to Evening Social Skills Program for up to ten (10) sessions
  • Referral to Alternative Education Program
  • Out-of-school suspension for up to ten (10) days

Level III Violations:

  • Alcohol                            

    A student will not possess, distribute or be under the influence of alcohol in an educational facility, on school grounds, a school bus or at any school sponsored function.

  • Defacing School Property             

    A student will not willfully cause damage to property of the school or others.  Actions such as writing in school texts or library books, writing on desks or walls, carving into woodwork, desks, or tables and spray painting surfaces are examples of damages to school property.

  • Disobedience                                    

    Disobeying a teacher in a willful manner.  A student will not willfully disobey a teacher.

  • Profane Language                 

    A student will not use profane language directed at a school employee.  Using profane language may include, but is not limited to, verbally, in writing, electronically, or with photographs or drawings, direct profanity or insulting obscene gestures toward any school employee.

  • Theft                                                 

    A student will not, without permission of the owner, take property or have in his/her possessions, property valued at between $100.00 and $999.00.

  • Hazing   
  • Improper or Negligent Operation of a Vehicle
  • Violation of School Rules or Policies            

    A student will not habitually or repeatedly violate school rules or policies.

Violations of Level III----School Actions:

  • Out of school suspension for up to ten (10) days and a request for an Alternative Education Committee (ALC) meeting prior to the conclusion of the ten (10) day suspension.
  • Alternative Education Committee and/or the Principal may refer to the Superintendent for expulsion action
  • Referral to the law enforcement agency and/or the legal system
  • Referral to the mental health agencies, if appropriate resource
  • Referral to the Department of Health and Human Services Agency, if appropriate resource
  • Referral for possible placement in the Alternative Education Evening School Program.

Level IV Violations:

  • Assault/Battery on a School Employee
  • Felony
  • Possession of a Firearm or a Deadly Weapon
  • A student will not possess a firearm or deadly weapon on any school bus, or in or on any public or private primary or secondary education building, structure, facility or grounds thereof or at any school sponsored function.  As defined in WV Code 61-7-2. a “dangerous weapon” means any device intended to cause injury or bodily harm, any device used in a threatening manner that could cause injury or bodily harm, or any device that is primarily used for self-protection.  Dangerous weapons include, but are not limited to, blackjack, gravity knife, knife, switchblade knife, nunchuka, metallic or false knuckles, pistol or revolver.  A dangerous weapon may also include the use of a legitimate tool, instrument, or equipment as a weapon including, but not limit to, pens, compasses, or combs, with the intent to harm another.
  • Sale of a Narcotic Drug
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance

Violations of Level IV----School Actions:

  • Immediate ten (10) day suspension of the student and notification of parent/guardian
  • Written referral to the superintendent for school expulsion with necessary documentation provided to the superintendent.  If the violation is possession of a controlled substance, actions will be taken pursuant to Policy 1106.00.
  • Expulsion hearing before the Mingo County Board of Education
  • If determined that the student did commit the violation, expulsion for a period of twelve (12) consecutive months by the County Board of Education unless reduced by the Superintendent pursuant to WV Code 18A-5-1a.
  • Immediate contact of the law enforcement agencies and referral to the legal system.

National Honor Society

Students are selected for membership in theNational Honor Society based on their outstanding qualities of scholarship,leadership, character and service. In accordance with the policy of the nationalorganization, the scholarship criterion for admission at Matewan High has beendetermined to be a grade point average of 3.2 or better. All sophomores,juniors, and seniors meeting this scholarship criterion will be sent HonorSociety membership application forms early in the second semester, whichstudents must fill out to be considered for admission. A faculty committee willmake the final selection of members based on the applications, activity advisorrecommendations, and input from the applicants’ teachers. Once selected,members must maintain these standards in order to continue membership in theNational Honor Society.

    EMERGENCY PLAN FOR MHS

In the event of an emergency concerning ourschool, the following procedures will be employed:

    • WVKM 106.7 radio station in Matewan will be contacted so that parents will be informed immediately. Please do not call the school.
    • All students will go to either the football field or the old Matewan Clinic lot above the school by walking behind the guard rail.
    • Faculty will accompany their students and check the roll. All buses will be dispatched to the designated area.
    • Bus drivers will check with the administration of both schools, Matewan High and Matewan Middle, for further instructions.

SCHOOL CLOSING FOREMERGENCY

In the event of severely inclement weather ormechanical breakdown, school may be closed or started on a time delayed basis.The same conditions may also necessitate early dismissal. School closing,delayed starting time, or early dismissal will be announced over the radiostation WVKM in Matewan. If no report is heard, it can be assumed that schoolwill be in session. Please do not call the school, as telephone lines must bekept open for emergencies.

    CARE OF TEXTBOOKS

Textbooks are loaned free ofcharge to all students for each class. It is the responsibility of the studentto keep and maintain his/her books in the best possible condition. If a book islost or abused in any way the student shall be required to pay for the textbook.If a book is assigned to you it is your responsibility. If someone else damagesyour book you will have to pay for it. The only writing in a book shall be thestudent’s name and number.

    SNACKS AND SOFT DRINKS

MHS will have snacks available for purchaseperiodically in the school store.  We are not in control of the soft drinkmachines. If you lose anything in them you will have to redeem it from thecompany.  Anyone caught kicking, beating or defacing any of the machineswill have to pay for the damages. No snacks or soft drinks will be allowedbeyond the double doors. 

    MEDICATION

No medication (prescription or over thecounter) of any kind is allowed to be dispensed by any member of the staffunless a signed copy of the administration of medication is on file at theschool. This form is available in the school office and must be completed in itsentirety and signed by both the parent/guardian and the doctor.  Medicationshould be brought in by the parent/guardian in the labeled container issued bythe pharmacy or physician with the name of the student, medication, dosage, andtime to be administered. Students cannot carry medication on their person unlessgranted permission under code by the school nurse (asthma inhalers are allowedwith proper paperwork on file in the office).   If you have questions,please do not hesitate to call the school to speak with the nurse or principal.  

AREAS THAT ARE OFFLIMITS!!!

In the mornings, at noon, and during breaks,students are not allowed in the side areas beyond Ms. Carol Harris’ room orback halls near the gym. Students are never allowed on the stage area orunder the bleachers in the gym. They may not go to any cars on the parkinglot during the entire school day without permission from an administrator.Beyond the “Pad” at the front entrance and below the second parkbench on the sidewalk are Off Limits.  Anywhere behind the highschool or middle school building is Off Limits. No student shall go tothe Middle School before receiving permission to do so from the High SchoolAdministration. Students who have classes in the gymnasium are not allowed toenter the gym area until the classroom teacher has arrived and has givenpermission to enter the gym.  Further, no students are ever allowed in thegymnasium unless a teacher is present and available for supervision.

CONDUCT ATATHLETIC/EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

All athletic/extra-curricularevents are under school authority. All county and school policies apply to allstudents who attend extra-curricular events.  Please remember to representMHS well!

When damage to school property occurs, allpossible means will be made to identify the students responsible and disciplinewill be issued according to policy.  They will be responsible for costsassociated with the damages.
